An angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream, telling him not to be afraid to take Mary as his wife. The angle tells him that what is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit:
“She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Yeshua (Jesus), because he will save his people from their sins.” (Matthew 1:21)
The name Yeshua means The LORD’s Salvation, or Cry Out to the LORD for Help. It is the short version of Yahushua, literally “YHWH saves (or turns) us”.
Many names in the Bible that begin with sound “yod” (represents the “Y” sound in Hebrew) are mispronounced. These names when transliterated to English were represented by “J” rather than “y”. In olden English the letter “J” was pronounced as “Y”. Thus Hebrew names such as ye-ru-sha-LA-yim, ye-ri-HO, Yeh-hu-dah, and yar-DEN have become known to us as Jerusalem, Jericho, Judah, and Jordan; and Hebrew personal names such as yo-NA, yi-SHAI, and ye-SHU-a have become known to us as Jonah, Jesse, and Jesus.
To understand the majesty of above verse, let’s read Philippians 2:9-11:
Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Yeshua (Jesus) every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father (Philippians 2:9-11).
As a Pharisee, Paul knew the Old Testament scriptures as he quotes Isaiah when he writes to the church of Philippi that Jesus of Nazareth is YAHWEH.
“Look to Me, and be saved, All you ends of the earth! For I am God, and there is no other. I have sworn by Myself; The word has gone out of My mouth in righteousness, and shall not return, That to Me every knee shall bow, every tongue shall take an oath….” (Isaiah 45:22-25)
So dear brothers and sisters, let us be bold by bowing our knees and confessing that Jesus Christ is our LORD the Savior of the world and our King. For the Bible says:
If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved. (Romans 10:9-10)
