In verse seventeen, Paul tells the Corinthians that Christ did not send him to baptize but to preach the gospel. When Paul said that Christ did not send him to baptize, he was not undermining the importance of baptism. Baptism was commanded by Christ himself. Paul was emphasizing that no one person should do everything. Christian ministry should always be a team effort; no preacher or teacher is ever a complete link between God and people, and no individual can do all that the apostles did. We must always be content with the role God has given us in the expansion of his kingdom and carry out wholeheartedly.

17 For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel—not with wisdom and eloquence, lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power.
