In verse ten, Paul talks about some of the marvelous gifts of the Holy Spirit.

The first one he refers to is prophecy. “Prophecy” does not just mean to predict the future; it can also mean a message received from God to the community of believers. Paul even states that “everyone who prophesies speaks to men for their strengthening, encouragement, and comfort”.

The prophet Joel emphasized this gift by the words written of the Lord, “I will pour out my Spirit on all people. your sons and daughters will prophesy”.

As with the gift of faith, the ability to share one’s faith with power is available to everyone. But to some, the Spirit gives a special measure of this gift.

Tomorrow we will speculate different viewpoints on “tongues” and its purpose.
