In verse six Paul basically talks about people who try to attain salvation by themselves. Some people try to earn their way to eternal life by obeying the Ten Commandments, attending church faithfully, or doing good deeds, but all they earn for their efforts is frustration and discouragement. Even if we could keep our actions pure, we would still be doomed because our hearts and minds are perverse and rebellious. We must always remeber to let the Holy Spirit turn our ways away from our performance towards believing Christ’s sacrifice .This is living “in the new way of the Spirit”.

Romans 7:6
6 But now, by dying to what once bound us, we have been released from the law so that we serve in the new way of the Spirit, and not in the old way of the written code.
