In verse twelve, Paul talks about different people following different preachers. In this large and diverse Corinthian church, the believers favored different preachers. Because there was no written Bible, the believers heavily depended heavily on preaching and teaching for spiritual insight regarding the Bible. Some followed Paul, who founded the church; some who have heard on Peter in Jerusalem followed him; while some only listened to Apollos, an eloquent and popular preacher who had a dynamic ministry in Corinth. Although these preachers were united in their message, their distinct personalities attracted different people. Because of this, the church was in danger of dividing. Paul makes it clear that God’s message is much more than any human messenger.

12 What I mean is this: One of you says, “I follow Paul”; another, “I follow Apollos”; another, “I follow Cephas[a]”; still another, “I follow Christ.”
