Paul was dealing with an ongoing problem in the Corinthian church. He could have given up and refuse to communicate to them, but he loved them and reached out to them again with the love of Christ. Both authority and personal concern are needed in dealing with people who are ruining their lives with sin. But there are several wrong approaches in confronting others, and these can further break relationships rather than heal them. We can be legalistic and force people to obey every law that the Bible states. We can turn away from them due to our fear to approach the situation head on. We can also isolate them by gossiping about them behind their back and turning others against them. As God’s people, we must seek to restore relationships by sharing, communicating, and caring. This can be a process that can emotionally drain us, but it is the only Christlike way to deal with others’ sin. Overall, Paul wrote this book to the Corinthians in order to defend his authority as an apostle and refute the false teachers in Corinth. Paul also wrote this book in order to teach us essential principles about trials and persecution, church discipline, hope, generosity, and sound doctrine.
