In verses one to three, Paul once again introduces himself as a servant of God.

Paul visited Corinth on his second missionary trip and founded a church. He later wrote several letters to the believers in Corinth, two of which are contained in the Bible.

Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians was lost, his second letter to them is our book 1 Corinthians, his third letter was lost, and his fourth letter is our book of 2 Corinthians.

Second Corinthians was written shortly under a year after 1 Corinthians.

Paul focuses on five mega themes through out this book. He elaborates on trials and how he himself was enduring and suffering a major trial himself a “thorn in my flesh”. He then talks about church discipline and defends his role in church discipline. He gives the Corinthians hope in this book by talking about their upcoming eternal lives and the limitations of their current bodies. Paul also defends his beliefs on giving and urges the Corinthians to follow through with their previous commitment. Finally, Paul writes this book to defend his authority as an apostle and challenges the false teachers at the time. He uses his sincerity, love for Christ, and concern for the people as his defense to uphold correct Christian doctrine.
