The author of this book is Apostle Paul, and he is writing to the church of Corinth. It was written approximately A.D. 55 near the end of Paul’s three-year ministry in Ephesus. Corinth was a major cosmopolitan city, a seaport and major trade center. The church was largely made of Gentiles. Paul established this church on his second missionary trip. The Christians in Corinth were struggling with their environment. Corinth was a city that was filled with much idolatry and corruption. Because of this spiritually hostile environment, Christians were pressured to adapt to the way of the world. Paul answers some of the Corinthians’ questions in this book. This letter confronts Christians about their sins and shortcomings. 1 Corinthians calls us to stand up and to be careful not to blend in with the world.
