Posted by Jonathan Merigala Sosthenes may have been Paul’s secretary who wrote down this letter as Paul dictated it. He was the Jewish synagogue leader in Corinth. Sosthenes was well known to the members of the Corinthian church, and so Paul included a familiar name in the opening of the letter. Corinth had a reputation for being independent and as decadent as any city in the world. The Romans destroyed Corinth in 146 B.C. after a rebellion. But in 46 B.C., the Roman Emperor Julius Ceaser rebuilt it because of its use as a seaport. The Romans made Corinth the capital of Achaia (Greece). It was a large city that offered Rome great profits through trade.
1 Corinthians 1:1-2
1 Paul, called to be an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and our brother Sosthenes,
2 To the church of God in Corinth, to those sanctified in Christ Jesus and called to be his holy people, together with all those everywhere who call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ—their Lord and ours:
