In the first verse, Paul declares that he is a servant of God that was called to preach the gospel. Paul wrote this book as a letter to the church in Rome. The church in Rome was most likely founded by believers at Jerusalem during the Pentecost and by people who heard the gospel and brought the Good News to Rome. Paul wrote this book during his ministry in Corinth which was at the end of his third missionary venture. From Paul’s perspective, his book’s purpose was to encourage believers in the faith and to express his desire to visit the Roman church someday. The New Testament has not existed yet in its final form, so this book was the first piece of Christian literature the Roman church has ever seen. Talking to all believers, Jews and Gentiles, we see how Romans basically presents the whole breakdown of the Christian faith.
