In the first verse, Paul states that there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. What if you were on death row for a crime that you have committed, but then the judge says “not guilty, let him for free”. All the thoughts that would be going through your mind. You would first feel relief and gratitude for the sparing of your punishment. This is what the first verse is illustrating. The fact is the whole human race is on death row, justly condemned for repeatedly breaking God’s holy law. Without Jesus, we would not have any hope at all of being spared or excused of our eternal punishment ahead. We must thank God because he has declared us not guilty and has offered us freedom from sin and power to do his will.
