In churches when the pastor is about to initiate communion, he strongly advises to not partake of the sacrament unless we are a true believer and follower of Jesus Christ.

Paul gives us certain instructions on how the Lord’s Supper should be observed.
(1) We should take the Lord’s Supper considerately because we are proclaiming that Christ died for our sins.
(2) We should take it worthily with the utmost due reverence and respect.
(3) We should examine ourselves for any unconfessed sin or resentful attitude.
(4) We should be considerate of others, waiting until everyone is there and then partaking in an orderly and unified manner.

When Paul was said that no one should take the Lord’s Supper in an unworthy manner, he was speaking to the church members of he Corinthian church who were rushing into it without thinking of its meaning.

1 Corinthians 11:27
So then, whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord.
