In verses five and six, Paul talks about himself and Apollos. Paul planted the seed of the gospel message in people’s hearts. He was a missionary pioneer. Apollos was an evangelist, apologist, church leader, and friend of the apostle Paul. Apollos was a Jew from Alexandria, Egypt. Apollos’s role was to water- to help the believers in Corinth grow stronger in the faith. Paul founded the church in Corinth, and Apollos built on that foundation. Unfortunately, the believers in Corinth had split into factions, pledging loyalties to different preachers. Our leaders should always be respected, but we must never try to put them in a situation which potentially could create barriers or divisions within the congregation.

5 What, after all, is Apollos? And what is Paul? Only servants, through whom you came to believe—as the Lord has assigned to each his task. 6 I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God has been making it grow.
