In verse four, Paul states that we as mortals must be swallowed up by life. Paul’s knowledge that his dying body would be swallowed up by eternal life, is a universal hope.

According to Ecclesiastes, God “has also set eternity in the hearts of men”. This verse basically means that humans have an innate sense of transcendence and a longing for an ultimate reality experienced only in the present God. This verse answers one of the most frequently asked questions in all of Christianity. Many people argue or claim that God is not fair because an individual might live in an inhabitable place where the gospel has not been preached. Even though the gospel was not preached to him/her, how is it fair that they go to hell anyway. God has given each and every one of us an innate aspiration of a supreme being and a reality beyond the fabric of space and time. It is what we do with this longing that God will hold us accountable and will benefit us eternally.

2 Corinthians 5:4
4 For while we are in this tent, we groan and are burdened, because we do not wish to be unclothed but to be clothed instead with our heavenly dwelling, so that what is mortal may be swallowed up by life.
