Jesus commanded us “to be perfect even as our Heavenly Father is perfect” (Matthew 5:48). In Luke Jesus refers to being “perfect in mercy as our Father is” (Luke 6:36). There are many things that we see at the cross where Jesus died that are a picture of how we also must react inwardly when we take up our cross.

• The bread broken symbolizes a fellowship with Jesus in being willing to be broken quickly (like bread), when we see that the will of God is opposed to our own will.
• The cup speaks of a fellowship with Jesus’ blood of the new covenant. The greatest sin ever committed on earth was the crucifixion of Jesus.

It is clear to everyone that those who killed Jesus knew what they were doing. Yet Jesus assumed that they did not know who he really was, and so he prayed that they might be forgiven for they were ignorant. This is what it means to be merciful.

Just like in the crucifixion of Christ, we must immediately forgive the spear-thrusts of others, release them, and respond with the love of God. This is what it means to follow Jesus.
