In verses thirteen and fourteen, Paul gives Christians a critical command.

As the Corinthians awaited Paul’s next visit, they were directed to be on their guard. They were to be watchful and vigilant for spiritual enemies that might threaten to destroy them – whether it be divisions, pride, sin, or erroneous theology.

Paul also tells them to stand firm in what they believe. Paul also tells them to be men of courage, so that they can stand up against false preachers and deal with sin in the church. Paul tells them to be strong with the strength given to them by the Holy Spirit. And most importantly, to do everything out of love because without love, they would be no more than prideful noisemakers.

We must never think that Apostle Paul’s command was reserved just for the Corinthians. Paul wrote this for all the upcoming generations as well. It is when a Christian follows these guidelines that he/she is truly able to represent Christ and do work that has present and eternal value.
