Propriety in Worship (Part 4)

In verse three, the phrase “the head of every man is Christ,” means Christ was present at Creation, he is the Creator of every man, and Christ is every believer’s source of life in the new creation.

The next part of the verse sometimes causes conflict within family and Christianity in general. It talks about the head of woman is man. Many people including Christians sometimes take this phrase and use it as proof in order to bolster their view of man’s dominion over woman.

However such views are far from the truth.

“Head” is not used to indicate control or supremacy, but rather “the source of”. Because man was created first, woman derives her existence from man, as man does from Christ and Christ from God. Evidently, Paul was correcting some excesses in worship in which the emancipated Corinthian women were engaging in.

1 Corinthians 11:3
3 But I want you to realize that the head of every man is Christ, and the head of the woman is man,[a] and the head of Christ is God.
