In verse one Paul tells us to submit ourselves to the governing authorities for there is no authority except that which God has established. Romans 13 contains one of the most controversial topics in the church. Tomorrow we will discuss the different interpretations of Christians concerning this topic. Are there times when we should not submit to the government? We should never allow the government to force us to disobey God. Jesus and his apostles never disobeyed the government for personal reasons; when they disobeyed, it was in order to follow their higher loyalty to God. Their disobedience was costly: they were beaten, threatened, thrown in jail, tortured, or executed for their fervent loyalty to God’s work. Like them, we as Christians must be ready to accept the consequences.

13 Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God.
