The fear of God is the foundation for a holy life. The secret to godliness lies in the fact Jesus Christ was tempted in all aspects of his life and overcame while being in the flesh.

But many people in the church know this fact intellectually—and remain haughty and arrogant.

We can see that these people may understand the doctrine of godliness, but not the secret to godliness.

The secret is not the doctrine but in an individual. Those who do not genuinely fear God will only understand the doctrine intellectually but have holiness that of an illusion.

According to 2 Corinthians 7:1, holiness can only be purified or perfected only in the fear of God. And so, whenever there is the slightest bit of unrest in your conscious about some matter, settle the issue immediately. Confess the sin to God at once, even if it has been only a failure in your thoughts. Mourn and ponder over each failure. Forgive those who you have irritated or the other way around.

You will then see how God strengthens you mightily.

The best way to overcome temptation is to avoid it and flee from it—as Joseph did. Avoid all locations and people that tempt you strongly and that make you weak. In eternity, you will be grateful that you did.
