What Is Good Friday and Why Does It Matter?

Good Friday is one of the most important days in the Christian faith. It is observed on the Friday before Easter and remembers the day Jesus Christ was crucified. While the name might sound strange, Christians call it “Good” because Jesus’ death was not the end of the story—it was the beginning of our salvation.

What Happened on Good Friday?

According to the Bible, Jesus was arrested, falsely accused, and sentenced to death by crucifixion. He was beaten, mocked, and nailed to a wooden cross. This painful and public execution took place outside Jerusalem. But even as He suffered, Jesus prayed for those who hurt Him and trusted God’s plan.

Jesus’ death fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah 53, which described the Messiah as a suffering servant who would carry the sins of many. Christians believe that Jesus died to take the punishment for our sins, offering forgiveness and eternal life to all who believe in Him.

Why Is Good Friday Important?

Good Friday is important because it shows the depth of God’s love. Jesus willingly gave His life so we could be made right with God. His sacrifice opened the way for us to have a relationship with our Creator. Without Good Friday, there would be no Easter Sunday and no victory over sin and death.

How Do Christians Observe Good Friday?

Many churches hold special services focused on reflection, prayer, and Scripture reading. Some Christians fast or give up something for the day as a way to remember Jesus’ suffering. The tone is quiet and serious, helping us understand the cost of our forgiveness.
