What Is Resurrection Sunday and Why Does It Matter?

Resurrection Sunday, often called Easter Sunday, is the most joyful and powerful day in the Christian calendar. It celebrates the day Jesus Christ rose from the dead, three days after His crucifixion. For believers, it’s not just a holiday—it’s the foundation of our faith.

What Happened on Resurrection Sunday?

After Jesus was crucified on Good Friday, His body was placed in a tomb. A large stone sealed the entrance, and Roman guards stood watch. But early on the third day, something incredible happened. The stone was rolled away, and the tomb was empty. Jesus had risen from the dead, just as He had promised.

Women who came to the tomb were the first to hear the good news from an angel: “He is not here; He has risen!” (Luke 24:6). Later, Jesus appeared to His disciples and many others. His resurrection proved that He had power over sin and death.

Why Is Resurrection Sunday Important?

Resurrection Sunday gives us hope. It confirms that Jesus is the Son of God and that His sacrifice on the cross was accepted by God. Because Jesus rose again, we can have new life, too—now and forever. His resurrection shows that no situation is beyond God’s power to redeem.

As Paul writes in 1 Corinthians 15:17, “If Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile.” But because He has been raised, our faith is full of life and promise.

How Do Christians Celebrate Resurrection Sunday?

Churches around the world gather on this day to worship, sing, and celebrate the victory of Jesus. Services often include joyful music, Bible readings, baptisms, and messages of hope. Many believers wear white or bright colors to symbolize new life.
